Juniperus horizontalis douglasii
Description: Juniperus horizontalis 'Douglasii', commonly known as Creeping Juniper, is a low-growing, evergreen conifer known for its dense, spreading habit and attractive silvery-blue foliage. This hardy groundcover is ideal for erosion control, rock gardens, and as a low-maintenance landscape plant.
Foliage:
- Needles: The foliage is silvery-blue, scale-like, and soft to the touch. It maintains its color throughout the year, turning slightly purplish in winter, adding seasonal interest.
- Form: 'Douglasii' has a prostrate growth habit, spreading horizontally to form a dense mat. It typically reaches heights of 15-30 cm and can spread up to 1.5-2.5 meters.
Growing Conditions:
- Climate: Creeping Juniper is highly adaptable and thrives in a variety of climates. It is particularly well-suited to temperate regions of Australia. It can tolerate hot, dry conditions as well as cold temperatures, making it versatile for different areas.
- Soil: Prefers well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils. It can tolerate poor soils and is highly resistant to drought once established. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
- Sunlight: Requires full sun to partial shade. For optimal growth and foliage color, it needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Watering: Needs regular watering during the establishment period. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
Planting and Care:
- Planting: Plant in spring or autumn. Ensure the planting site has excellent drainage and ample space for the plant to spread. It can be used as groundcover, in rock gardens, or on slopes for erosion control.
- Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. Trim to shape and remove any dead or damaged branches as needed. Pruning is best done in late winter to early spring before new growth begins.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. Mulching around the base can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Pests and Diseases: Juniperus horizontalis 'Douglasii' is generally resistant to most pests and diseases but can occasionally be affected by:
- Juniper Scale: Small, white insects that can cause yellowing of the foliage. Treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.
- Spider Mites: Can cause foliage to look speckled or bronzed, especially during hot, dry weather. Increase humidity and use miticides if necessary.
- Phomopsis Blight: Causes shoot tips to turn brown and die back. Prevent by avoiding overhead watering and ensuring good air circulation.

Where are our plants Grown and how do we grow them
- Plants are grown locally on the Sunshine Coast
- All outdoor plants are sun hardened and ready to grow
- Indoor plants are grown under 50% Shade and will transfer perfectly to indoor use
- Orchids are also grown under 50% Shade and are best brought indoors during flowering for show then returned back into a shaded area until the following flowering time

How to Look after your plants like we do
- When using any Garden Care products or Fertilisers we always recommend reading the label before use
- We recommend using Earthlife crushed rock mineral on all plants when planting in the ground or in Pots.
- When planting in Pots in Our garden centre we use either Rocky Point Premium Potting mix or our own custom potting mixes blend to plant all our plants
- If planting in the ground we also recommend that you use good quality Bagged garden soil around your plants at the time of planting
