Dichondra repens
Dichondra repens, commonly known as Kidney Weed or Lawn Leaf, is a low-growing, creeping perennial herb prized for its dense, carpet-like growth habit and attractive foliage. Native to Australia and New Zealand, this versatile ground cover is valued for its ability to form a lush, verdant lawn alternative in both sunny and shaded areas of the garden.
Height and Width
- Height: Typically grows to a height of 2 to 10 centimeters.
- Width: Spreads out to form a dense mat, covering an area of several square meters.
Soil Type
- Soil Preference: Kidney Weed prefers well-drained, moist soil with a loamy or sandy texture. It can tolerate a range of soil pH levels, from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, but performs best in fertile, humus-rich soil.
Plant Description
- Foliage: The plant features kidney-shaped leaves that are small, rounded, and bright green in color, with a velvety texture. The foliage forms a dense, low-growing mat that spreads rapidly, providing ground cover and suppressing weed growth.
- Growth Habit: Kidney Weed has a prostrate, creeping growth habit, with slender stems that root at the nodes as they spread across the ground. It forms a dense, carpet-like mat that can withstand light foot traffic and creates a soft, cushioned surface underfoot.
Flower Description
- Flowers: Kidney Weed produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are greenish-white in color and borne on slender stalks above the foliage. The flowers are not particularly showy or ornamental and may go unnoticed amidst the dense foliage.
Cultivation and Care
- Watering: Provide regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, particularly during periods of dry weather or when grown in containers. Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry.
- Sunlight: Kidney Weed prefers partial to full shade but can tolerate some sun in cooler climates. It thrives in shaded areas of the garden, making it an ideal choice for under trees, along pathways, or in areas with dappled sunlight.
- Temperature: Kidney Weed is tolerant of a wide range of temperatures and is well-suited to the Australian climate. It can withstand moderate frost but may go dormant in colder regions during winter, resuming growth in spring.
- Maintenance: Maintain a dense, healthy stand of Kidney Weed by mowing or trimming it regularly to encourage lateral growth and prevent it from becoming too leggy. Avoid cutting too short, as this can stress the plants and inhibit growth.
- Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for lawn grasses and ground covers in spring to promote healthy growth and lush foliage.
Additional Notes
- Pests and Diseases: Kidney Weed is relatively pest and disease-resistant but may be susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew, especially in humid conditions. Monitor regularly and treat promptly if issues arise.
- Uses: Ideal for use as a low-maintenance lawn alternative, ground cover, or accent plant in gardens, parks, and landscapes. Kidney Weed adds lush greenery and visual interest to shady areas, providing a soft, inviting surface for walking and relaxing.
