Cornus sericea flaviramea Baileyi
Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea', also known as Yellow Twig Dogwood or Golden-Twig Dogwood, is a deciduous shrub prized for its vibrant yellow stems, ornamental foliage, and seasonal interest. Native to North America, this variety is valued for its winter color display and adaptability to a wide range of growing conditions.
Height and Width
- Height: Typically grows to a height of 1.5 to 3 meters.
- Width: Spreads out to a width of about 1.5 to 2.5 meters.
Soil Type
- Soil Preference: Yellow Twig Dogwood prefers moist, well-drained soil with a loamy or sandy texture. It can tolerate a range of soil pH levels, from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline.
Plant Description
- Foliage: The plant features oval to lance-shaped leaves that are dark green in summer, turning shades of yellow, orange, or red in autumn before dropping. The foliage adds ornamental value to the landscape throughout the growing season.
- Stems: 'Flaviramea' is prized for its bright yellow stems, which provide striking contrast against the winter landscape. The stems are particularly vibrant in colder climates and can add visual interest to gardens during the dormant season.
- Growth Habit: Yellow Twig Dogwood has a spreading, multi-stemmed growth habit, forming a dense, rounded crown with age. It can be pruned to maintain shape and encourage new growth, making it suitable for hedging, screening, or mass planting.
Flower and Fruit Description
- Flowers: In late spring to early summer, Yellow Twig Dogwood produces clusters of small, creamy white flowers at the tips of the branches. While the flowers are not particularly showy, they attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
- Fruit: Following flowering, Yellow Twig Dogwood may produce small, round, white berries. The berries are not particularly ornamental and are primarily valued for their wildlife appeal, attracting birds and other wildlife to the garden.
Cultivation and Care
- Watering: Yellow Twig Dogwood requires regular watering, particularly during periods of drought or dry weather. Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. It thrives in bright, sunny conditions but can tolerate some shade, especially in hot climates.
- Temperature: Yellow Twig Dogwood is hardy to a range of climates and is tolerant of cold temperatures and frost. It can withstand winter temperatures well below freezing, making it suitable for cooler regions.
- Pruning: Prune as needed to maintain shape, remove dead or diseased branches, and promote airflow. Yellow Twig Dogwood generally requires minimal pruning but benefits from occasional rejuvenation pruning to encourage new growth and maintain vigor.
- Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for shrubs in spring to promote healthy growth and flowering.
Additional Notes
- Pests and Diseases: Yellow Twig Dogwood is relatively pest and disease-resistant but may be susceptible to powdery mildew, leaf spot, and canker in certain conditions. Monitor regularly and treat promptly if issues arise.
- Uses: Ideal for use as a specimen shrub, hedge, screen, or mass planting in gardens, parks, and landscapes. Yellow Twig Dogwood adds both visual and seasonal interest, providing colorful stems, ornamental foliage, and wildlife habitat.
