Camellia japonica Black Tie
Camellia japonica 'Black Tie' is a striking cultivar of the Camellia japonica species, known for its dark red, formal double flowers and glossy evergreen foliage. This plant is highly valued in gardens for its elegant blooms and ability to provide structure and colour in shaded areas.
Height and Width
- Height: Typically reaches a height of 2 to 3 metres.
- Width: Spreads out to a width of about 2 to 3 metres.

- Soil Preference: Camellia japonica 'Black Tie' prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils. It thrives in rich, organic matter and loamy soils. It is important to ensure the soil remains consistently moist but well-drained to prevent root rot.
Plant Description
- Foliage: The plant features glossy, dark green leaves that are oval-shaped with serrated edges. The evergreen foliage provides year-round interest and a lush backdrop for the vibrant flowers.
- Growth Habit: Camellia japonica 'Black Tie' has a dense, upright, and bushy growth habit. It can be pruned to maintain a compact shape or allowed to grow more naturally as a larger shrub or small tree.
Flower Description
- Flower Colour: The flowers of Camellia japonica 'Black Tie' are a rich, dark red, adding a touch of sophistication to any garden setting.
- Flower Shape: The flowers are formal double in form, featuring numerous overlapping petals that create a symmetrical, rose-like appearance.
- Blooming Season: This plant flowers prolifically from late winter through to early spring, providing a burst of colour when many other plants are not in bloom.
- Attracts Wildlife: The flowers are attractive to pollinators such as bees, adding a benefit to the garden ecosystem.
Cultivation and Care
- Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Mulching can help retain soil moisture and keep the roots cool.
- Sunlight: Prefers partial shade to full shade. It can tolerate morning sun but should be protected from harsh afternoon sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
- Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged wood. Light pruning can also help improve air circulation within the plant.
- Fertilising: Benefits from a balanced, acid-loving fertiliser applied in early spring and again in late summer. Avoid fertilisers with high nitrogen levels as this can promote excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
Additional Notes
- Pests and Diseases: Generally pest and disease-resistant, but can occasionally be affected by scale insects and aphids. Good air circulation and proper care can help prevent these issues.
- Uses: Ideal for use as a feature plant, in shaded garden beds, and as part of a woodland garden. It can also be grown in large containers. Its attractive flowers and foliage make it suitable for both formal and informal garden styles.
